Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to build a solid foundation in any dance style under the supervision of experienced dancers and dance teachers.Persons with some dance experience apply the skills and knowledge outlined in this unit. Experience would usually have been gained in dance classes, amateur performances or community dance activities, often from an early age. However, this unit also applies to individuals with no prior training, but with an aptitude for dance and an interest in developing technique in one or more dance styles.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to appropriate dance performance areas or spaces.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Identify different dance styles
  • Discuss aspects of dance styles with relevant personnel
  • Identify and use safe dance practices
  • Discuss cultural protocols that need to be observed when performing cultural dance styles
  • Use dance terminology correctly in discussions
       
Element: Practise simple movements
  • Under the guidance of a teacher or mentor, perform warm-up exercises
  • Practise basic steps associated with selected dance styles, working within own physical limits
  • Incorporate musicality, timing and rhythm into exercises
  • Perform warm-down exercises after dance activity

  • In consultation with others, agree on sequences that include a range of movements suitable to own technical ability
  • Match personal presentation to selected dance styles
  • Communicate the mood or style of dance sequence to spectators

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

explain why the following aspects of safe dance practices are important:

warm-up and warm-down activities

correct clothing and footwear

healthy nutrition and diet

describe the cultural context of selected dance styles.
